- It may take much longer to see results

In short, the greatest pro is that you still have the income and the biggest con is that you do not have enough time. Money and time cannnot both be had. With that in mind, here are some recommended solutions:

1) Find a mentor.

PipsPowerGroup Summer Business Building Contest Update

Back at the beginning of June, Pipspowergroup started a summer contest for its members. The contest should last about 45 days. Each voluntary participant would start with their initial Alexa ranking and url documented in a designated thread and post their daily activities afterwards through the duration of the contest.

Now 30 days have passed, and the mentors have announced a current standing of the top 10.

It came as an extreme surprise, but I am glad to report that I am among the top 10. I really haven't done as much as I would like. I see everyday that other members were posting more activities than me and often felt I hadn't done enough.

I do tell myself that I should mind my own pace. I have a full time job and two young children; finding time to work on my simple work from home opportunity consistently is a challenge, although so far, I've managed to do something almost everyday.


There are actually more activities that I have done that I did not post. They pertain to reading relevant materials, surfing for traffic credits, posting in private forums, working on articles, etc. I didn't include them as I don't think they result in a concrete backlink. I only reported activities where I created some content, such as a blog post, or article, or actual web directory submissions. When it comes down to it, I feel as though only content and backlinks matter.

I think the Pipspowergroup mentors were brilliant in scheming up this contest as it really helps us start developing a daily work routine, which I think is the key to success with online work from home opportunities.

There are still 15 days left of the contest. The mentors say that it is a close contest, and standings can change. With my limited time, I may not move as fast as I wish, but as long as I can establish a solid routine, I feel satisfied. Anything else would be icing on the cake.

I have high expectations for my business, just like everyone else in this field. Even though I know it takes time to build my home business, in the back of my mind, that expectation of a flourishing online business never went throgh a reality check. High expectation itself is a good thing. If we can use it to guide our effort instead of results, we would be spared of a lot of unnecessary frustration

2) Instant Gratification as Conditioned by Our Culture

In this culture (America), there is so much emphasis on instant gratification that people want to see results fast and do not appreciate the process of gradual building and cultivating. We want a pill to cure chronic disease and a magic touch to fix any problem. The truth is, good things, like bad things, take time to build. Health, like chronic conditions, take time to build. or evolve. The same is with a simple work from home opportunity. If the breakthrough point has not come, this means more effort is needed to continuously cultivate. It is really too premature to feel any dispair.

3) Lacking a Solid Game Plan

Not having a game plan is perhaps the third and major culprit. It is said that 95% percent of people trying an online opportunity will fail. Without a doubt, they do not have a game plan aimed for success. But even for those who are committed to make something out of it, not having a game plan can really increase the chance of eventual failure as there is no shield for the constant distractions, hypes and unrealistic expectations.

There are many reasons that people start pursuing a work from home business on the Internet. Some of the common ones are:
1. Financial reward
2. More free time with family
3. Less work hours (wishful thinking, of course)
4. Flexibility with location
5. Be your own boss
6. Less polution for the environment (saved from cutting the commuting)
etc.

I share all of these motivations to some degree. But I have two reasons that top all of the above.

My number 1 motivation is to build something by myself. This is different from resenting the boss-subordinate relationship at work that you see in some work from home opportunity ads. I actually have really good rapport at work. My 9-5 job has never been a source of undesirable stress. Still, I want to build something by myself. Thanks to the Internet; it has made it easy to start this pursuit.

It really means to keep on trying new things until one day the rule of randomness goes in your favor. Before you reach that breakthrough point, in any phase of your journey of building your home business online, there is no need to decide if you are a failure or if someone else is a failure or success, as you are not the one determining the timing of your success; the rule of randomness does. After all, Joanne K. Rowling had nine rejections before her Harry Potter became a huge success. Her work was always good; but success only came about when the rule of randomness spoke on her behalf.

It is clear, though, that if you stop trying, even the rule of randomness cannot help you.

So the epiphany of the day is to keep on trying what you believe in, whether it is a work from home opportunity or some other passion or pursuit. If you try it enough times, success will happen to you as the rule of randomness will act on your behalf when the timing is right.

Make A Simple Plan for Online Success

One of the mentors at the Pipspowergroup with which I am a member did a post of "Your mini day" recently. In the post, he highlights the importance of planning in the overall strategy for online business success. Basically, the proportion of the time resource spent on planning should be 1/3, while another 1/3 is on promoting the business and still another on taking care of emails and article writing combined.


This is an interesting point. Most people, myself included, do not do enough planning. It never occurred to me that I needed to allow time to plan for my next day's marketing activities. Perhaps due to this lack of plan, I find myself lose focus easily. Sometimes, I will feel inspired to do many things while other times, I would feel all of a sudden lost.

If you find yourself hang out in the forums and/or checking emails most of the time, then you could probably use some planning.

When it comes to planning, the more specific the goal the better. For instance, it is good to decide on a link building campaign, but it is better to commit to submitting to, say, 10 web directories everyday. It is good to set the goal of writing one article a week, but it is better to determine the title of your next article and the time slot you have to get it done.

The reason for specific planning is that there are so many contending priorities in building an online home business that without a clear order of specific steps, one may just lose oneself in the combined jungle of information overload and administrative logistics. Before long, one would feel disillusioned with the work from home opportunity by the lack of progress.

Therefore, to avoid the pitfall of not having a plan, here is the solution: have a plan. Here are a few guidelines for you to make an actionable plan:

1. Use 1/3 of your daily time commitment to your home business to figure out a plan for the next day.
2. Be very exact and specific about the task(s) you plan for your next day
3.Avoid distractions at all cost and focus on following your plan
4. Make the plan simple and tasks achievable

This is the guideline that I am following myself. I hope you will find it helpful.

Keeping Your Best Unique Content to Yourself

My first ever articels were submitted to EzineArticles.com. Ever since my articles were accepted and I was labeled an Expert Author, pride welled up in me and made me want to reach that next level - the Platinum Member. To that end, despite my limited article marketing effort, I rushed to submit every new article I wrote to EzineArticles. Now I am beginning to wonder if I should keep my best original content for myself instead of handing it over to other sites.

The notion of keeping the best unique content for yourself first struck me when Mal Keenan, a Pipspowergroup mentor, mentioned it in his ebook created for the Pipspowergroup members. He basically said that we should create a lot of unique content, and we should keep it either on our own blogs or add it to our primary websites. After all, why should we contribute to the unique content of other sites.

I know Mal didn't mean not to do article marketing. I take it that he means that if you already have some articles out there, let them multiply the backlinks while any more new unique content you create should be kept for yourself on your blog. Interesting concept; and I think it makes intuitive sense.

It is important to build up the presence of your website or blog by continuously adding new content to them. In the long run, keeping the best original content for yourself sometimes should prioritize over submitting it to other sites, particularly if you have already have backlinks from these sites through past submissions.

It also makes intuitive sense to spread out your articles to different directories instead of submitting to a few sites repeatedly. Two links from the same site cannot weigh as much as two links from different sites with the same PR in the eye of the search engines.

To conclude, the strategy in article marketing is (1)to submit to different directories vs repeated submissions to the same sites (2)to keep new unique content for yourself after you have disseminated some articles out there. Also, getting that Platinum Member designation is really not that important after all.

RSS - Simple Explanation

RSS is one of those terms that is both clear and fuzzy in a lot of people's understanding. The term has been thrown around for so many times that no one would admit not knowing it. In reality, how RSS is used remains a puzzle to a lot of people. Today, I aim to provide all you need to know about RSS.

RSS is abbreviation for three formats:

1. Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
2. RDF Site Summary (RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.90)
3. Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)

These formats represent a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content including, but not limited to, blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. An RSS document (which is called a "feed" or "web feed" or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays. (Source: Wikkipedia)

RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. For the average user, RSS can provide tremendous convenience in aggregating the newest information on the user's favourite sites so that the user doesn't have to go check each one by himself.

Although the average user can have the updates sent ot his email inbox, it is a lot less hassle if he just signs up with Google Reader for an account to read RSS feeds. That way, all the RSS feeds the user has subscribed to will come into this one location where he can go and get the most up-to-date information in the least amount of time.

How to Be Efficient In Your Internet Marketing Effort

In the course of building my Simple Work From Home Opportunity, I have come to certain realizations here and there that I wouldn't have had without my simple home biz online. Today, I want to share my revelation on efficiency. I realized that success in Internet marketing has a lot to do with efficiency, or speed, which also translates into quantity in some sense, and this efficiency has to do with developing a system in doing things, a system not necessarily a software package, but rather, practice management.

I got a chance to reflect upon this in the course of my article marketing effort. I like to write my own articles, and I think they are decent articles as well. However, I have not been able to do two articles a week consistently. This, compared with other people who are submitting articles everyday, is quite a pathetic effort. How can I write faster? There must be a way.

My membership with Pipspowergroup recommended a writing system that promises to help you write an article in 30 minutes. I checked into it and found that the system, or rather, practice management, is to help the individual focus on following a fast-writing habit repeatedly until it is second nature. The method is really not extraordinary conceptually; but it is very smart.

The method makes you complete your starting thought with whatever comes to mind that is relevant, even if it is remotely so. It does not allow you to check or critique yourself until the writing is done. By doing so, you get to focus putting down your input on the given topic instead of critiquing yourself or second guessing yourself on if there is a better way to present your point. Such straying of thoughts is what I am habitual to, unfortunately.

It is interesting to realize that my own thoughts were slowing me down. I tend to try to be thoughtful and analyze everything thorougly before taking actions, perhaps to a fault. In the Internet marketing arena, success really comes with duplication of proven steps in many cases. If article marketing is the best method to build backlinks for the gurus, it will work also for the newbies. There is really not much analysis called for in this respect. What is called for is taking actions, and quickly for that matter.

In any event, the main point I'm making here today is that our own thoughts are what slow us down in our effort. If we could be as simple as Forrest Gump, incapable of sophisticated analysis of everything, we may be better blessed in the world of Internet Marketing, as was Forrest Gump in his ventures. We may follow simple directions more readily and focus better in any of our actions.

In terms of writing articles, my thoughts that have often slowed me down, I now realize, are those that try to read from the top after every sentence. I tried to come up with the best sentence in the coherent structure and usually found very little to reword after the article was completed. As such, it would really take time to finish a complete article. This pace will never be enough to build backlinks efficiently.

I resolve here to follow the smart 30 minute article writing system and develop the habit of fast writing. As a starter, I will not check my sentence each time one is written, but will continue with the flow of my thoughts until the topic concludes naturally. I will go back to do edits afterwards. Let's see if this kind of approach will help me produce the kind of articles that I'm pleased with.

Thoughts on Network Marketing

Advertizing, networking or marketing were never my strength. Before I started my simple work from home opportunity, I never needed to deal with them, either. Now that I own an online business, I have begun to relate to some of the concepts underlying network marketing/advertizing. It's all very interesting to learn.

One of the things I have learned is that never worry that there will not be an audience. The truth is that there will always be an audience. Some audiences are aggressive; they actively seek the opportunity to be sold to. Others are laid back; they may not appear to be looking for anything. Regardless of the type of audiences, the network marketer's job is to put himself/his product on the path of the audience so that his product is stumbled upon at minimum. When he puts himself out there to cover as many paths as possible, audiences on those paths are bound to make some sales for him.

It is partly in the spirit of putting myself out there that I started article marketing. I wanted to build some back links but never thought that my articles would catch any personal attention. The other day, one of my newer articles received a vote, which came as a pleasant surprise for me: someone cared enough to comment on my article; and it was a vote of confidence, too. This incidence also reinforces the notion that when the marketer puts himself out there, interaction with his audience is bound to happen.

So, I guess today's thought and lessons learned, for benefit of fellow marketers, are to take action to spread word about your business; and let the rest of the world react to what you have to share with them.
