Blogger Blog Title Fix for SEO Optimization

Recently, I found that all of my blog posts were indexed with my blog name ("My Home Biz Journal") preceding the individual post's title. The description of the entry was also invariably the description of my blog. This means that all my blog posts looked pretty much the same as indexed by Google. This can't be too good.

After consulting my mentors at Pipspowergroup, I learned that this kind of indexing harms my search engines rankings as all the entries appeared to be duplicate submissions. No wonder my blog has seen disappearing search engine traffic despite my frequent updates. This is a problem that has to be solved. But how?

I looked at Google's help center and all over the Internet and found that for the version of Blogger template I am using, the new, Beta version, there is no proven fix that still works. There appears to be a straightforward fix for the old Blogger template, but not for the Beta version that I am using. I can see from various posts that many people were stuck as I was.

My Beta version of the Blogger template features a title tag that looks like this: [title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title] (Note: I used square paretheses in order for the code to show in the blog. The real parentheses should be "<" and ">"). The closest fix I found was the widget based code for changing the blog title. It was supposed to replace "[title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title]".

However, when I ran it, Blogger refused to save it as there was an error of [b:section]cannot be within the [head] tags, which was exactly where [title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title] was.

I am not an xml expert myself; I hardly know anything about xml. Regardless, adventurous as I was, I decided to try a wild guess. I took all of the widget based code out of the [head] tag and placed it just before the [head] . I also deleted the "[title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title]" that was originally within the [head]tags.

Blogger saved the code without objection, and my post titles now precede my blog title and were indexed as such in the search results!

The widget based code was shortened, however, upon saving by Google, to the following look:

(Note again! I'm using square paretheses here so that Google wouldn't treat it as real xml code and make it disappear in my post. Use "<" and ">" if you want to implement the code yourself)

One additional, important observation. At some point after my fix initially worked, somehow the "[title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title]" went back in between the [head] tags without me knowing. That messed up a new post I made; the new post had my blog name in the front again and a bunch of "+" marks trailing with no content showing in the search result.

Did Google revise my template code? Or is it another professional whom I had asked to help me out on the blog before? It is somewhat of a mystery right now. Regardless, it is important that after you install the code above BEFORE the [head] tag, you must delete the orginal "[title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title] from within the [head] tag for it to work.

To conclude, if you want to have your blogger blog title fixed and optimized for search engines, you can try what I did by installing the above code with "<" and ">". But be watchful for some time lest the "[title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title]" may sneak back into your template's code to mess up your blog posts' title again.

Also, I have to disclaim the fix above as I am no programer. The code above works for me, but you have to figure out if it's the best choice for you.

Update: I do not recommend the above method anymore. It worked for me for a few days and I actually got quite some traffic for this particular post. However, after the initial few days, I could not find this post, along with a few other new posts, in the search engine anymore. It felt as if they were dropped from some kind of list that is used to guide indexing. Perhaps the search engines use what is in the Head tag to do more permanent indexing. Placing the title tag outside of the Head tag may prevent such indexing. In any event, I've temporarily gone back to the original Blogger default template. I will look for another template to replace the Blogger one later. Cheers. Ying

Update: It's the strangest thing. After my last update, I noticed that my posts with the hacked template all appeared in the search result and continued to bring me traffic. In addition, some of my older posts have been updated to have post titles preceding the blog titles, which is the way I want them to be. This makes me want to test the hack again. So that's what I will do.

RSS - Simple Explanation

RSS is one of those terms that is both clear and fuzzy in a lot of people's understanding. The term has been thrown around for so many times that no one would admit not knowing it. In reality, how RSS is used remains a puzzle to a lot of people. Today, I aim to provide all you need to know about RSS.

RSS is abbreviation for three formats:

1. Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
2. RDF Site Summary (RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.90)
3. Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)

These formats represent a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content including, but not limited to, blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. An RSS document (which is called a "feed" or "web feed" or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays. (Source: Wikkipedia)

RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. For the average user, RSS can provide tremendous convenience in aggregating the newest information on the user's favourite sites so that the user doesn't have to go check each one by himself.

Although the average user can have the updates sent ot his email inbox, it is a lot less hassle if he just signs up with Google Reader for an account to read RSS feeds. That way, all the RSS feeds the user has subscribed to will come into this one location where he can go and get the most up-to-date information in the least amount of time.

One of the biggest enemies when pursuing online work at home opportunities is over analyzing everything. Performing intellectual analysis is a good thing per se. However, when it is to the extent that it prevents taking actions, it becomes deadly to building your home biz online.

I myself am guilty of doing way too much analysis. I’ve had many years of schooling, and I cannot help but thinking everything thrice. When I first learned about article marketing, I wondered: will it really work? I wouldn’t want to waste my time on it if it didn’t work. I then read and read, spending a lot of time to get comfortable with the effect of this approach.

A few months later, I came to the conclusion that article marketing is indeed the best marketing approach available and am finally ready to commit to this strategy. But look at the time it took me to get here. For the months elapsed, I could have concentrated on writing articles and got a head start in building my page ranks via generating backlinks.

In a similar fashion, I postponed getting a lead capture page for the longest time. I wasn’t nimble at doing it myself but hesitated at spending the money to get it done. Is it really useful, I wondered. A few months later, I concluded that I really need a lead capture page. It is like the entrance to my web business, much like the door to my house. Without it, it is hard for visitors to come visit me.

There are other cases where I think I did too much analysis. I realize now that success on the Internet is really about duplicating other people’s successes. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Stick to a simple plan and give it a few months at least to see what can happen to your business. Taking actions, and any actions for that matter, is the golden key to online success.

Avoid paralysis through analysis. Simplify your approach, take actions, and your online home business will get a chance to thrive.

The Internet has made it possible for millions of people to make money online. Advertisements for work at home opportunities are abundant and tend to hype them as effortless, in some cases, free and /or with overnight successes possible. How should the average person interpret the potentials of these opportunities, and what can one realistically expect from the promises?

Aside from scams, most of these online opportunities have some level of potentials. Some opportunities offer more free tools than others. Others offer better commissions while assessing a monthly fee and/or upfront investment. Still others have more certainty of return but require a lot of time, and the return is relatively low (such as online surveys). Regardless of the types of opportunities, none is effortless and none is likely an overnight success.

A good work at home opportunity package should be simple to set up and provide as many free tools and guides as possible. An average prospect can reasonably expect the following components be free when evaluating a potential opportunity:
1) Customizable website (eg. PlugIn4Profit)
2) Non customizable gateways (eg, SFI, Success University, Leisure Audio Books, Empowerism, etc.)
3) Training (eg. PlugIn4Profit)
4) Marketing aids (eg. PlugIn4Profit)
5) Promotional offers (eg. PlugIn4Profit)

This is a must if you have your own website. Although it is possible to have free hosting service, authorities say that you get what you pay for when it comes to hosting services. If you want your website to be a reliable one in the eye of your potential customers, a free version may not be wise.

2) AutoResponders –
This is also important as it helps automate your communications to your list of potential customers. A serious online home biz will have this service sooner or later.

3) The marketing effort of promoting your website -
This last component has the lion’s share of an online home biz opportunity. No one has been able to make the marketing part free for any Internet marketer because it is just impossible. Having a business online essentially is learning all the skills to promote a website and put them into action, spending as much or as little along the way depending on the desired pace of progress by the marketer. This process of learning and applying of the knowledge cannot be passed on readily. The individual has to go through the experience by himself, much like a child has to grow up to know what growing up is like.

To sum up, a work from home opportunity may be simple but by no means effortless. Interested prospects should bear in mind that no matter what opportunities they pursue, they will likely need to learn all the skills necessary to promote a business on the Internet; this is an extended process and will not happen overnight. The aspiring marketer’s success is less likely attributable to the easy, effortless appearance as hyped by the solicitation of the opportunity but will be dependent completely upon himself. With personal effort and dedication, any kind of opportunity will bring some level of return.

How to Be Efficient In Your Internet Marketing Effort

In the course of building my Simple Work From Home Opportunity, I have come to certain realizations here and there that I wouldn't have had without my simple home biz online. Today, I want to share my revelation on efficiency. I realized that success in Internet marketing has a lot to do with efficiency, or speed, which also translates into quantity in some sense, and this efficiency has to do with developing a system in doing things, a system not necessarily a software package, but rather, practice management.

I got a chance to reflect upon this in the course of my article marketing effort. I like to write my own articles, and I think they are decent articles as well. However, I have not been able to do two articles a week consistently. This, compared with other people who are submitting articles everyday, is quite a pathetic effort. How can I write faster? There must be a way.

My membership with Pipspowergroup recommended a writing system that promises to help you write an article in 30 minutes. I checked into it and found that the system, or rather, practice management, is to help the individual focus on following a fast-writing habit repeatedly until it is second nature. The method is really not extraordinary conceptually; but it is very smart.

The method makes you complete your starting thought with whatever comes to mind that is relevant, even if it is remotely so. It does not allow you to check or critique yourself until the writing is done. By doing so, you get to focus putting down your input on the given topic instead of critiquing yourself or second guessing yourself on if there is a better way to present your point. Such straying of thoughts is what I am habitual to, unfortunately.

It is interesting to realize that my own thoughts were slowing me down. I tend to try to be thoughtful and analyze everything thorougly before taking actions, perhaps to a fault. In the Internet marketing arena, success really comes with duplication of proven steps in many cases. If article marketing is the best method to build backlinks for the gurus, it will work also for the newbies. There is really not much analysis called for in this respect. What is called for is taking actions, and quickly for that matter.

In any event, the main point I'm making here today is that our own thoughts are what slow us down in our effort. If we could be as simple as Forrest Gump, incapable of sophisticated analysis of everything, we may be better blessed in the world of Internet Marketing, as was Forrest Gump in his ventures. We may follow simple directions more readily and focus better in any of our actions.

In terms of writing articles, my thoughts that have often slowed me down, I now realize, are those that try to read from the top after every sentence. I tried to come up with the best sentence in the coherent structure and usually found very little to reword after the article was completed. As such, it would really take time to finish a complete article. This pace will never be enough to build backlinks efficiently.

I resolve here to follow the smart 30 minute article writing system and develop the habit of fast writing. As a starter, I will not check my sentence each time one is written, but will continue with the flow of my thoughts until the topic concludes naturally. I will go back to do edits afterwards. Let's see if this kind of approach will help me produce the kind of articles that I'm pleased with.

Book 5 - Mining Gold From Ebay
Like Bloggers Guide to Profit, this book is short and sweet with 32 pages but covers efficiently all major angles of making full use of eBay to financial gains. There are many ways to make money online. This book gives a great guide to work the system of eBay. It will definitely prove to be beneficial for anyone who frequents eBay (might as well make some profit for yourself), or who wants to branch out to include eBay in one’s business portfolio.

This book explains 9 business models on the Internet that have proven to make people financial gains. Each model is explained in a uniform, easy to follow format with pros and cons, tips, resources, complete with an interview with someone who has had great success with the method. Very helpful in understanding your options.

Submit Your Website To Web Directory – Simple Guidance

I understand the importance of submitting your website to directories, but for the longest time, I didn’t start doing it as there are so many directories out there that I didn’t know where to start.

For benefit of anyone not familiar with web directories, they are like phone books, and that’s how people find you (your website). Directories can be free, paid, with some requiring a reciprocal link.

For the Internet marketer newbie, the best approach would be to find free directories, not requiring reciprocal links and with the highest possible page rank.

Today, I finally came cross such a list of directories. Let it guide your effort, if you are in the same shoe as I am.
